Shedding

During shedding season, my favorite friends are the Furminator and the vacuum. But having so many Shiba's in the house, it seems like shedding season is all year round. If I am lucky, I'll have more then one dog blow their coat at the same time.

Fact: Shiba's are double-coated, with the outer coat harsh and straight, and undercoat soft and dense. They will blow their coat (shed their under coat) twice a year.

Currently, Tina and Winnie are blowing their coats. Fur everywhere. This is Tina's first time and she has very dense puppy fur. Last night I sat down with her and plucked clumps of fur from her tiny little body. I filled a grocery bag 3/4 full in 5 minutes. Winnie tends to have a fluffy rear-end when she blows her coat. The fur on her back legs can get very long, making it harder to get at the dense undercoat.  The result; fluffy butt. It looks ridicules. Today I trimmed the longer fur and went at the leftovers with the furminator ... what a difference it made.

When shedding, I tend to furminate them every couple days outside on the picnic table; they love it. (I really should be doing everyday). My Shiba's actually push each other out of the way to get in on the action ... even when they're not shedding. I keep meaning to take pictures, the amount of fur is unbelievable!

To all shiba owners : I recommend you buy the Furminator. Best shedding tool out there. Reduces shedding by 90%.
