New Ideas

After searching, buying, going threw different brands and styles ... I am sick of paying tons of money and/or not being able to find styles I like for Dog Accessories ... collars, pants, harnesses, etc ... so here is my big idea ... I am going to start my own Doggie Boutique.

Online store, trade shows and buy word of mouth. It'll be an adventure that I am hoping takes off. I plan on making a few of the items as well as selling some brand name items that I am a fan of. So far I have Puppia Harness and maybe some Red Dingo products. I will keep you posted as I go along ... So far we have come up with the name of our home products and company ...

The Girls

Molly and Shiloh felt so refreshed after being at the groomers. They were so excited and hyper. We took them for a walk around the lake and into the park; it wore off some of the built up energy. Had many compliments on how pretty they were! Got to love how everyone thinks adult Shiba's are puppies ... but really , Shibas are just that darn cute and small.

Smelly Shibas

After writing my last post, I believe I jinxed myself.

Today, as I glanced out the window to check on the two Shiba's in the back yard ... I noticed them both rolling on the ground.  Shubert, with his stunning white coat, all of a sudden had brown stains all over his neck. I had a hunch .. poop, but who's? Being completely curious, and brave might I add, I found I needed to know exactly what I was dealing with. I went out to have a look ... there was no poop left on the ground. I decided to sniff Shubert's neck and yes .. it was definitely poop ... but not dog poop!? So I am just going to assume that a neighborhood cat had a nice bathroom break in my yard, as thankfully my dogs don't tend to rub up in their own fesses. I guess Shubert didn't like his nice new shampoo smell, and needed a different identity.

If you are wondering why in the world Dogs will do this, here is a good read. Why Dogs Roll in Smelly Stuff

Back from Salon

I love when the Shiba's take a visit to the Doggie Groomers. I usually bath them myself, but going once a year is a treat for them. The Groomers I go to has an awesome coat drying system that makes my Shiba's coat beam.
I love it!

Tina and Shubert went this week.
First time for both of them.
Next week, Shiloh and Molly.
Taking them one or two at a time is easier on me ... and my pocket book.

Cream or No Cream

I was cleaning up my email inbox and came across an email that was sent to me a couple months back. It was from a breeder, who felt that I was breeding unacceptable Shiba colors. I was bothered by the thought of someone thinking that I was a misguided breeder. This individual has never met me, has never seen my dogs or my home, nothing ... and just because I breed colours that are considered a fault in the show ring ... does not make me or my dogs unacceptable. I take pride in my Shiba pack and what I do. I will not let some random breeder put me down for having a passion for my Shiba's and wanting to share it with others ... no matter what colours my Shiba's are.

Which brings me to the Standard Shiba colors.

There are three Standard Shiba colors that are accepted in the show rings; Red, Sesame, and Black and Tan.

CKC Standards: Colour is clear and intense, with undercoat of cream, buff or gray.  “Urajiro” (creamy white ventral colour) is required on all three allowed colours, in these areas: side of muzzle, cheeks, inside ears, on underjaw and upper throat, inside of legs, on abdomen, around vent, ventral side of tail. Cream does not extend over nasal bridge. Cream spots above eyes, on tip of tail, and on forechest permitted but not required. White markings known as socks permitted but not desirable. Spots of colour in the urajiro are highly undesirable. “Reverse mask” (all cream/white face) is a fault.

Black and Tan: Black has rusty cast, not blue, and extends over the entire dog. Clearly defined tan markings located over the eye, sides of muzzle, “bowtie” pattern on forechest, outside of forelegs from carpus to toes, outside of hindlegs from stifle down to toes, leaving black on rear of pasterns. Black pencilling on toes permitted. Tan may be found inside of ears and underside of tail.

Red: light red to deep orange red. This color combined with the urajiro markings resembles the color of a fox.

Sesame: red with black tipped hairs scattered evenly on body and sometimes head, with no concentration in any one area. A widow’s peak may be seen on the forehead, leaving the bridge and muzzle red.

Picture of Winnie on  the right. I would consider her more of a red sesame. The black tipped hairs in a Shiba sesame can  be half and half with red or a bit less, giving it a darker appearance (black sesame).  Black tips should not be more then 50% of body or it would be considered to be Black and Tan.

But as most of you Shiba lovers know, they also come in Cream.

Cream:  white to cream and often has buff or pale red markings on ears and back. Sometimes you will even see a cream colored Shiba with red ears.

My first Shiba was a cream. My love for the creams is great. My creams don't need Champion titles. So what if they can't go in the show rings. They make great companions ... after all, they are still 100% Shiba Inu. For the judgment from the other breeder, I am not going to change what colour of Shiba I raise. I love my cream Shiba's, and so if that is a crime ... then I am guilty.

Shedding

During shedding season, my favorite friends are the Furminator and the vacuum. But having so many Shiba's in the house, it seems like shedding season is all year round. If I am lucky, I'll have more then one dog blow their coat at the same time.

Fact: Shiba's are double-coated, with the outer coat harsh and straight, and undercoat soft and dense. They will blow their coat (shed their under coat) twice a year.

Currently, Tina and Winnie are blowing their coats. Fur everywhere. This is Tina's first time and she has very dense puppy fur. Last night I sat down with her and plucked clumps of fur from her tiny little body. I filled a grocery bag 3/4 full in 5 minutes. Winnie tends to have a fluffy rear-end when she blows her coat. The fur on her back legs can get very long, making it harder to get at the dense undercoat.  The result; fluffy butt. It looks ridicules. Today I trimmed the longer fur and went at the leftovers with the furminator ... what a difference it made.

When shedding, I tend to furminate them every couple days outside on the picnic table; they love it. (I really should be doing everyday). My Shiba's actually push each other out of the way to get in on the action ... even when they're not shedding. I keep meaning to take pictures, the amount of fur is unbelievable!

To all shiba owners : I recommend you buy the Furminator. Best shedding tool out there. Reduces shedding by 90%.

First Blog

I thought it would be fun to blog about my shiba pack. I am always talking about them to my friends and family and I think they are getting sick of hearing about them. What can I say; I am obsessed with my animals and love the breed. Seriously now, who wouldn't be after meeting one.

To tell you the truth I get excited when I see a complete stranger's Shiba. You don't see many of them around, but I always want to stop my car and get out just to talk to the dog owner and meet their spunky Spitz.
Obsessed? I think so.

I have joined a Shiba Meet Up Group in the Calgary area. They get together once a month and it gives the owner a chance to meet and greet other Shiba aficionados owners and most importantly it gives the Shiba's themselves a chance to meet others just like them and socialize. I am quite excited. This coming Saturday will be my first time going and it looks like it will be a good turn out (13  so far).
I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

As most of you ... who already know me, I am a Shiba breeder.
I currently have 9 gorgeous dogs and two small pups.
www.barrettkennels.com  is our main website.
One pup, the new owner has named her Coraline, will be going with me to Calgary this weekend. There, I will be meeting up with a young couple that picked her out last weekend. This will be their first Shiba and I think Coraline will be a great match for them.
Kaede, her brother, we have not sold yet. I am not in any rush.
His perfect owners will come along, I am sure.
